Driving around in Malaysia

Many people are apprehensive about driving in Asia, but hiring a car offers a good alternative to battling with public transport.

The road condition in Malaysia is generally good, the standard of driving is a lot better than in many other Asian countries, and the roads are (mainly) well sign-posted.

In Malaysia you drive on the left side of the road (cars are right-hand drive which make this a lot easier than you may think).

You can drive a hire car in Malaysia using your regular Driver’s License for up to 3 months; (if you are planning a longer trip you will need an International Drivers’ License) and you must be over 21 with at least a years’ driving experience – this varies by dealership, so check when making your reservation.

Be prepared to put up with motorbikes which will try and cut in front of you at traffic lights, and never drink and drive – in Malaysia the police often have roadblocks right outside popular bars and nightclubs.

Self-drive trips in Malaysia

There are several excellent self-drive itineraries which will give you a chance to see the more hidden charms of Malaysia.

For instance, you could drive from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands, stopping to see the Batu Caves along the way.

From the Cameron Highlands you can tour a tea plantation before heading to the Island of Penang to laze on the beach, swim, snorkel and enjoy the variety of water sports available.

From Penang you could take a leisurely drive through the spectacular rain forest along the East-West Highway, en-route to Kota Bharu, some of the east coast beach resorts, and then on to Terengganu to visit the famous floating market.

In a hire car you will get closer to the heart of this friendly and exotic country – you may never want to leave!
