Brisbane City by car hire
Once you have picked up your hire car, and dropped off your luggage at your accommodation a great introduction to the city is a cruise on the Brisbane River. There are many operators to choose from. Another great place to start your exploration of Brisbane is South Bank, which has a large variety of restaurants and cafes, a riverside boardwalk along which you can take a stroll and an inner-city beach. South Bank is also Queensland’s Cultural Precinct, and is home to the Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery and the must-see Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).
A short drive away from Brisbane is the Scenic Rim, the large arc of mountains that run from the Mistake Ranges, across the Main Great Dividing Range to the MacPherson Range that extends to Currumbin on the Gold Coast. This region, only a 1 hour drive from Brisbane includes the towns of Ipswich, Beaudesert and Boonah, and is a great natural wilderness area to explore by rental car and on foot.
Family Fun is only a short drive by rental car
The Gold Coast is only an hour drive from Brisbane. With amusement parks such as Dream World and SeaWorld, it is the perfect place to have a rental car. If you are planning on staying overnight then there are a huge variety of accommodation to choose from, located around the city of Surfers Paradise. North of Brisbane is the Sunshine Coast, home of Steve Urwin’s Australia Zoo and the Big Pineapple. Its beaches rival any you will find in the world and as an area it is less built up than the Gold Coast. The Sunshine Coast is about 100km from Brisbane.
If you fancy something a little bit different, then consider driving inland and exploring The Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast. A rental car is especially valuable here so that you can explore the villages of Montville and Woombye or the Maleny forest at your leisure.
