Your options are endless but the most popular one way car rental routes from Greymouth are to Christchurch or as far as Auckland.

If you are able to, take the long way around and head for Queenstown first.

The road along the west coast will take you past some fascinating and breathtaking sights such as the west coast glaciers.

The first town you will come across on your journey south is Hokitika.  Thereafter, it won’t be long before you reach the famous Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers.

Once you reach Haast, it’s time to head inland towards the Mount Aspiring National Park, Wanaka and Queenstown.

Spend some time in this town and take in all the lovely sights and rest for at least a night or two before continuing up towards Christchurch.

From here you have two options: an inland route to Christchurch or a coastal road.  Both are exceptionally scenic and both lead past or near hammer springs.

Should you choose the coastal route, make sure to stop off in Kaikoura and consider visiting the nearby scenic reserve.
