Located only seven miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, capital of Indiana, the airport serves as an alternative gateway to the region when Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is at its busiest.

Indianapolis 500

Billed as the ‘Racing Capital of the World,’ Indianapolis is most famous to visitors with a particular agenda: the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, one of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world.

Traditionally held over the Memorial Day weekend in May, the Indy 500 is a well-attended event that should not be missed by motor enthusiasts when in the city.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is hard to overlook as it is only 20 minutes north by car from Indianapolis Airport.

The race is by no means the only attraction the state has to offer.

Outside of the race season, Indianapolis draws tourists looking for antique, flea market or craft store finds which require less adrenaline but more patience to be fully enjoyed.

Indiana Dunes

Three hours north by car from Indianapolis Airport is a large swath of undeveloped coast just south of Lake Michigan known as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Amidst the towering dunes, swamp and wetlands, sand beaches, oak savannas and pine groves, stands Mount Baldy, a 120-feet actively moving dune that makes up one of Lake Michigan’s natural breakers.

Chicago’s Gold Coast

If you have traveled this far north, maybe it’s worth going a bit farther up to Chicago’s Gold Coast less than an hour to the northwest.

From here, you can take the Lake Shore Drive which parallels the Gold Coast to view the impressive skyline of Chicago.

You don’t have to worry about returning to the same location as there are plenty of in-city and airport drop off sites for one way car rental.

Local and international car rental companies are well-represented at the Chicago O’Hare Airport.

Michigan’s Wine Routes

Michigan’s sandy soil and lake-influenced climate are ideal growing conditions for Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris and Grigio, among others.

Grand Rapids, little more than five hours north by car makes a great base for a wine tour of the region plus a great drop off location.

The city is serviced by the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

The Rust Belt

The American Midwest was once a hive of heavy industry until manufacturing was moved overseas.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the great industrialists of early 20th century set up their headquarters, is a short driving distance away.

From there, the Rust Belt runs north to Cleveland, Ohio, then to the Ford Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.

Visit these non-touristy areas to get a more authentic experience of the region.

Even better, plenty of airports in the region can be used as drop off locations of for one way car hire so you need not drive back to your starting point.

The cities exude more of post-industrial vibe now, but you can still see the former glory of the ‘Industrial Heartland of North America’ in the hulking buildings that once housed production lines and provided better opportunities for rural sharecroppers in the Deep South and Mississippi Delta.

Those southerners traveled north via the Great River Road, today a popular route itself for travelers.
