Hire a Johannesburg Airport Rent-a-Car

Car rental in Johannesburg airport is fast and efficient and you can be on your way in just a few minutes.

Just follow the signs from the arrivals hall and you’ll see an area where all the major car hire companies have their offices; including Hertz, Europcar, Thrifty and Sixt rental cars.

You can compare car rental rates between companies to make sure you get a cheap deal on a compact, economy, van, or 4WD vehicle.

It is generally best to book online before you arrive to avoid any delays, especially if you are arriving in the early morning, along with the rush of business travelers.

For many people visiting South Africa from abroad, Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg will be where they get their first glimpse of this diverse and vibrant country.

Out and about in Johannesburg and beyond

Johannesburg has very good, but very busy roads and directions can be a little confusing.

Either buy a good map in advance and plan your route or buy a local SIM card for your smartphone so that you are familiar with the road numbers you will see on the signage.

A GPS Sat Nav is another alternative – you can rent one at the Johannesburg Airport car hire office when you pick up your car or from the Vodacom shop (together with a pay-as-you-go local cell phone – much cheaper to use than International roaming) in the airport arrivals hall.

Expect the roads to be busy, especially at peak times – over one million people use them every day!

You will need some cash to pay road Tolls as well as to pay for petrol – most fuel stations do not accept credit cards.

What to see and do in your hire car

There is plenty to see and do in Jozi or eGoli (two of the city’s nicknames).

Visit Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum, the Lion Park, the Lesedi Cultural Village or go and see the South African Lipizzaners in action.

There are several excellent shopping malls in Sandton, Hyde Park and Rosebank, to name just a few, and they all offer safe parking.

Traveling from Johannesburg

Everyone who visits South Africa wants to see the wildlife!

If you do not have enough time to spend a few days in the Kruger National Park, (about 5 hours drive from Johannesburg) head out on a day-trip to the Pilansberg National Park just 2 hours away on excellent roads.

This is the fourth largest game reserve in the country and has all of the Big 5 and offers an exceptionally good chance of seeing plenty of game in a short amount of time.

But stay for a few days if you possibly can – it’s a great place and you can visit Sun City, next door, for golf, gaming and entertainment.

Enjoy your stay in Jozi and just remember to Keep Left!
